Orthodox Theology--Adam, the Icon of God

@Slavonic Book of Enoch 31:3-6 [2nd cen. BCE]--All the angels were commanded by Michael the archangel to pay homage to the image [ikon] of God; whereupon all bowed before Adam except Satan, who, in punishment for his rebelliousness, was hurled from his heavenly heights to the depth of the abyss, while his vacant throne was reserved for Adam, to be given to him at the time of the future resurrection. Henceforth, Satan became the enemy of man, appearing to him in the guise of an angel of light to seduce him (compare II Cor. xi. 14).

@Book of Adam and Eve 13.2 [2nd cen. BCE]--God said to Michael, 'Behold I have made Adam in the likeness of my image [ikon].'
14.1 Then Michael summoned all the angels. and God said to them,'Come, bow down to god whom I made.'
14.2 Michael bowed first. He called me [Lucifer] and said. 'You too, bow down to Adam.'
14.3 I said, 'Go away, Michael! I shall not bow down to him who is posterior to me, for I am former. Why is it proper for me to bow down to him?'
15.1 The other angels, too, who were with me, heard this, and my words seemed pleasing to them and they did not prostrate themselves to you, Adam.
16.1 Thereupon, God became angry with me and commanded to expel us from our dwelling and to cast me and my angels, who were in agreement with me, to the earth; and you were at the same time in the Garden.
16.2 When I realized that because of you I had gone forth from the dwelling of light and was in sorrows and pains,
16.3 then I prepared a trap for you, so that I might alienate you from your happiness just as I, too, had been alienated because of you."

@Gospel of Bartholomew 3:52 [2nd cen. CE]--But the devil said: Suffer me, and I will tell thee how I was cast down into this place [Hades] and how the Lord did make man.
53 I was going to and fro in the world, and God said unto Michael: Bring me a clod from the four corners of the earth, and water out of the four rivers of paradise. And when Michael brought them God formed Adam in the regions of the east, and shaped the clod which was shapeless, and stretched sinews and veins upon it and established it with joints; and he worshipped him, himself for his own sake first, because he was the image of God, therefore he worshipped him.
54 And when I came from the ends of the earth Michael said: Worship thou the image [ikon] of God, which he hath made according to his likeness. But I [Satan] said: I am fire of fire, I was the first angel formed, and shall I worship clay and matter?
55 And Michael saith to me: Worship, lest God be wroth [angry] with thee. But I said to him: God will not be wroth with me; but I will set my throne over against his throne, and I will be as he is. Then was God wroth with me and cast me down, having commanded the windows of heaven to be opened.
56 And when I was cast down, he asked also the six hundred that were under me, if they would worship: but they said: Like as we have seen the first angel do, neither will we worship him that is less than ourselves.

@ Quran 17:63 [7th cen. CE]--And when we [the Creator] said to the angels, ‘Adore Adam;’ and they adored, save Iblis [Satan], who said, ‘Am I to adore one whom Thou hast created out of clay?
64 Said he [Satan], ‘Dost thou see now this one whom Thou hast honoured above me, verily, if Thou shouldst respite me until the resurrection day, I will of a surety utterly destroy his seed except a few.’ 65 Said He, ‘Begone! and whoso of them follows thee- verily, hell is your recompense, an ample recompense. -->painting of Angels Adoring Adam

@ (Hebrews 1) [120 CE]--Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets,
2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son. . . .
3 He is the reflection of God's glory and the exact imprint [ikon] of God's very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. . . .
5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have begotten you"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"?
6 And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him." 7 Of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire."
8 But of the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of your kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions."

This legend is met with in Byzantine and Syrian literature, and was incorporated in the Quran (v. Bonwetsch'es 'Questions of Bartholomew,' Göttingen Nachr., 1897, 36 ff.). Apparent traces of it in earlier times are noted by W. Meyer in the Munich Abhandlungen xiv 3, 198. A rabbinic version is given by M. Grünbaum, Neue Beiträge 70. It is related as follows in another Coptic encomium on Michael, attributed to Chrysostom (Paris 1311, 43):

'The angels beheld the likeness and image of God in Adam and they fell down and worshipped him and gave him glory as the likeness [ikon] of God. But Mastêma, which is Sataniêl, saw the honour that was given to Adam and he was greatly jealous. He stiffened his neck before the Lord and said unto the angels: "it befits not us to worship Adam, for he is virgin (parthenikos) of earth; but we are angels (formed) of flames of fire and honourable, (made) from the elements (hyle pl.) of fire, while he is earth from the earth." And he desired in his wickedness to lead astray (skandalizein) the angels, going in and stiffening his neck before God. But Michael the archangel and all the orders (tagma pl.) of heaven marvelled at the pride of the devil (diabolos) and his vainglory (kenodoxia) and they hardened their hearts against his tyranny (tyrannos) beseeching him daily that he would leave his pride and repent and become humble and remain in his honour. But he would not hear them, but he conceived trouble, &c.' (Ps 7: 15;17).
